Dear Readers,
Welcome to the final issue of the Journal of Law & Technology’s Volume XXXI. This has been an incredible year leading JOLT, and we are extremely grateful for the outstanding team alongside whom we had the privilege to work. From working together as an Executive Board, to our Editorial Board and dedicated Journal Staff; each member brought talent and an unwavering commitment to excellence that made this year both meaningful and memorable.
In that spirit, our third and final issue marks a special departure from our usual format. At JOLT, innovation is not just what we strive to achieve in our scholarship—it defines the Journal’s ethos. For this issue, we sought to reimagine how we contribute to legal discourse and share the thoughtful work of professionals, scholars, and leaders. Rather than publishing traditional written pieces, we produced a podcast series: four episodes featuring unique voices at key intersections of law and technology.
In JOLT’s inaugural first Episode, Joe Noser, Vol. 31 Managing Editor, speaks with Sergio Gramitto Ricci, Associate Professor of Law at Hofstra University, to explore how digital tools are reshaping access to the stock market and the meaning of corporate ownership. Their conversation examines how investing apps have made the market more accessible than ever, empowering everyday investors to engage directly with corporate power structures. Yet, as Professor Gramitto Ricci points out, shareholding remains a fundamentally undemocratic process—one shaped by longstanding norms of corporate governance that often foster apathy rather than participation. This episode considers how the new digital landscape, with its abundance of accessible, high-quality information, offers an opportunity to challenge those norms and reimagine shareholder engagement. Listeners will come away with a deeper understanding of how technology is shifting the boundaries of corporate governance, stakeholder influence, and the future of democratic participation in capital markets.
In Episode two, Jack Sherwood, Vol. 31 Senior Articles Editor, speaks with George Miroulis, a Design and Development Engineer at Icarus Medical Innovations, to discuss the gap between cutting-edge biomedical engineering and the legal considerations that make medical innovation possible. This conversation explores the pivotal role of patenting in the early stages of product development, the intricacies of securing both domestic and international patents, and the regulatory challenges of navigating FDA compliance. George shares insights into the process of developing new medical technologies, the responsibility of reshaping the tools available to the healthcare community, and the pressures of innovating in a rapidly evolving and highly competitive field. Whether you’re interested in science, law, or entrepreneurship, this episode offers a deeper understanding of how engineering, innovation, and legal frameworks converge to drive the future of modern medicine.
In Episode three, Avery Younis, Vol. 31 Senior Manuscripts Editor, and Kathryn Threatt, Vol. 31 Executive Editor, sit down with Jeanine Botwe-Brown, Intellectual Property & Technology law Attorney as well as the founder of Seating, a company established to empower and equip young professionals with crucial skills. Mrs. Botwe-Brown’s experiences as an associate at a boutique law firm, multiple In-House roles, and as a founder lead to a conversation full of insightful strategies, tips, and encouragement in navigating the legal profession. From that conversation, we hope you take away tools to brand yourself as an attorney, understanding the importance of mentorship for yourself and others in this field, and discovering new avenues for your legal journey.
In our fourth and final episode of JOLT’s first podcast series, Jack Sherwood sits down with James Williams, a Partner at Tingen Law PLLC, and a University of Richmond School of Law and JOLT alumnus whose practice operates at the forefront of Gaming and Intellectual Property law. From navigating the intricacies of trademark registration for businesses, to counseling clients on streaming, DMCA takedowns, immigration issues, and the broader liabilities of digital content creation; James offers a compelling look into the evolving legal landscape. We hope your listen provides you with valuable insights into the legal frameworks shaping gaming and online media and instills a deeper appreciation for the opportunities and challenges in this dynamic space.
We are especially thankful to our JOLT staff, who brought creativity, dedication, and technical skill to this project; to our podcast guests, who generously shared their time and insights; and to you, our readers and now listeners, for being open to new ways of engaging with legal discourse. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Prof. Jessica Erickson, Carl Hamm, and Michael Dickerson for their invaluable assistance in helping us start this podcast from the ground up.
As always, we are deeply grateful for your continued support of Richmond JOLT. The enthusiasm and engagement of our community pushes us to keep exploring the evolving boundaries of law and technology. We hope you enjoy this special edition and we look forward to continuing to innovate with you in the volumes ahead.
Sincerely,
The Executive Board of Volume XXXI
